Evacuation Day – Friday 15th January
Dear Parents,
On Friday 15th January, as part of our Second World War topic, we will be learning more about evacuation and want the children to imagine what it would have been like to be evacuated. We would like the children to prepare a bag/suitcase/brown paper parcel tied up with string and bring it to school on that day ready for their evacuation! The bag may contain a teddy bear, photo of family, set of children's clothing, toothbrush, nightdress/pyjamas, sandwiches and chocolate wrapped in greaseproof paper or newspaper, pen & diary, labels and string. Children may also wish to dress like a 1940s school child but this should be kept quite simple. For boys, tucking trousers in socks, wearing a jumper and a cap should suffice. Girls could wear a skirt, blouse and cardigan or jumper, hair in plaits and knee length socks. We must stress that parents should not go to any expense whatsoever and normal school uniform is also absolutely fine. Thank you in advance for your support with this. This has been a wonderful enrichment experience for the children in previous years.
Goodnight Mr Tom and Anne Frank DVDs
Dear Parents and Carers
As part of our Second World War topic we intend to show the children the DVDs above. Goodnight Mr Tom is the wonderful story of a boy evacuated during the War
to Devon where he is cared for by a kindly old man ‘Mr Tom’. Anne Frank is a BBC television version of the story shown at teatime on TV a few
years ago. Both films are rated PG due to certain emotional elements. If you would like to discuss either of the films with your child’s class teacher
before they are shown in class please pop in to see us and we can arrange a viewing time after school. Alternatively if you would rather your
child did not watch either or both of the films please return the reply slip below by Monday 11th January.
Finally, on the last 2 Fridays of this half term (29th January and 5th February), we are planning to make torches as part of our Science topic (Electricity), linking to our Second World War topic. We need every child to bring in a 500ml empty water bottle for this and are also seeking any helpers who would be keen to help the children wiring small circuits. Please let Mrs Heap or Mrs Baker know if you can help on either or both of these days.
Don't forget Maths Whizz, PE kit and swimming kits for next week. Also there will be another spelling test on Monday as usual.
Have a lovely weekend.
