Sheffield - Steel City

Friday 22 Apr 2016

As part of our Sheffield topic, we kicked off the week with a great trip to the town centre. We couldn't have packed more into the day if we had tried. The visit began in Tudor Square with a spot of sketching. Several of the children had never seen the Lyceum or Crucible theatres before and it was interesting to see the hustle and bustle surrounding the World Snooker Championships at the Crucible.  We then headed off to meet the Lord Mayor in his parlour. The questions the children came up with were really thoughtful and generated some useful answers for our research into Sheffield. The children were able to hold and see many of the mayoral artefacts and to enter the Council Chamber.

Following our meeting with the Lord Mayor, we went to the Millennium Galleries to view the metalwork collection and the treasures in the Ruskin Gallery. Whilst there we did more sketching and finished off in the Winter Gardens before lunch. Now as luck would have it, we managed to fit in a quick game of snooker in the Winter Gardens and some of the children even made it onto television as the cameras were rolling.

We shall be heading into Sheffield again in a couple of weeks' time to visit the Madina Mosque and the General Cemetery. A letter went home tonight about that visit.

Finally just a reminder that our Thornbridge Residential is coming up soon. Please can balances be paid via Parent Pay asap and also we need to have the Medical forms back by the deadline so we can compile the list of requirements for the trip. We always find that children come back from the trip feeling more mature and independent, having learnt to mix with new friends and spend time away from home. We are already starting to encourage children in class to show more independence and are making them aware of being responsible for their own learning, possessions, homework and behaviour. We would appreciate your support in re-enforcing this at home.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.
