There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom

Friday 04 Mar 2016

This week we began to read a new class book called 'There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom' by an author called Louis Sachar.

"Give me a dollar or I'll spit on you."

That's Bradley Chalker for you. He is the oldest child in the class. He tells enormous lies. He picks fights with girls, and the teachers say he has "serious behaviour problems."

No one likes him - except Carla, the new school counsellor. She thinks Bradley is sensitive and generous, and she even enjoys his far-fetched stories. Carla knows that Bradley could change, if only he weren't afraid to try. Sometimes the hardest thing in the world is believing in yourself.

So far we have been introduced to the three main characters: Bradley, Jeff and Carla.  We have discussed our initial impressions of each character and questioned Bradley in a hot seating session.  We then went on to discuss friendship and whether it was something you could buy or sell. One beautiful explanation to this was:

Friendship has to be earned not bought or sold it has to be earned.

After that we wrote our own definitions for friendship, we were really impressed with the children's definitions. I think they were better than the dictionary's!

Friendship is kindness, honesty and helpfulness.

A friend is someone who you can trust and know they will support you when you are in doubt.

Friendship is knowing another person and getting along and trusting each other enough to share feelings and secrets and sticking up for each other.

Friendship means that you respect someone and are kind to them and stick up for them if they are being bullied.  You should also trust each other.

In maths we began the week measuring lines and objects around the classroom accurately. We have also been practising multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 so that we can convert mm, cm, m and km.

In sporting news, the Y5 boys team were fantastic on Thursday evening. They played some lovely football and the teamwork on show was superb. Well done boys!

Not only have the children worked hard all week, they had some fantastic costumes for World Book Day. Thank you for all you help and hard work with the costumes.

Don't forget it's parents evening on 14th and 16th March. Log on to the parents evening booking system to book your appointment.

Have a a great weekend.
